US West Coast longshore workers at 29 ports have ratified a three-year contract extension with Pacific Maritime Association (PMA) – setting the stage for “productive cargo operations for years to come”.

The current contract was set to end on 1 July 2019, but has now been extended until July 2022.

With formal ratification now complete, PMA president James McKenna issued the following statement on the historic three-year contract extension “This first-of-its-kind contract extension is great news for the maritime industry and the nation, setting the stage for reliable and productive cargo operations for years to come. This agreement also continues to provide ILWU workers with a generous wage and benefits package during a time of great change in the global maritime business.

“With this agreement in hand, PMA looks forward to working with the ILWU to bolster the West Coast waterfront’s standing as a leader both nationally and globally.”
